REVIEW - Sexual Awakenings: The Tango

The Waltz - Angelica Chase
***This is one review for all four books in this serial novella series.***

4 to 4.5 "Pussy here, now!" Stars!

description

Sexual Awakenings by Angelica Chase is an erotic four part serial novella series about one woman who sets out on a journey of no holds barred sexual awakening and exploration and not only discovers who she is during the process but also comes to the realization that living on the dark side fulfills her in ways she never thought possible. Each book ends in a startling manner; however, the good news is that the entire series is now released and you do not have to wait to move on to the next book.

This series must be read in sequential order:

Part One: The Waltz
Part Two: The Tango
Part Three: The Last Dance
Part Four: Curtains

“Down the rabbit hole it is.”

Violet Harvell (a.k.a. Vi) has had enough of her failing three-year marriage. The husband who she once loved with all of her heart has been cheating on her for the past year and Violet is no longer willing to sacrifice her own happiness and remain in the empty void that is her marriage. She decides that she wants to spend one year exploring her deep seated desires that have long been ignored in her cold marriage. This sexual adventure would be one of enlightenment and experiencing new things, an awakening of sorts.

Violet’s searching leads her to The Rabbit Hole, a sex club where anything can happen. There she meets Rhys Voltz, the owner of the club and a Dom himself. Rhys is the answer to her every fantasy. He is sex incarnate and “Mr. Thick Cock” himself is just the man to take her on this kinky sexual voyage. The connection Rhys and Violet have is powerful and intense. Violet wanted to have her every desire met and what she got with Rhys was so much more than that. As a matter of fact, both Rhys and Violet get a whole lot more than they bargained for.

Join Rhys and Violet as they embark on this tantalizing journey of deceit, kink and eroticism. There are a lot of bumps in the road and both have some huge revelations that come out into the open leaving them reeling with the aftermath. Violet’s world went from one of desperation, anger and sadness over her failing marriage to one filled with kinky pain and pleasure at the hands of a masterful Dom. As for Rhys, he was used to keeping the women in his life at a distance, always breaking things off when things became too serious emotionally. Violet was different. She was someone he wanted to pursue with everything that he had – complications and all. Both had a lot of baggage and both had to not only embrace their physical connection which was intense and magnetic, but they also had to deal with how they connected on an emotional level which was as equally as powerful. I loved how both their characters evolved and grew. They were challenged and had to overcome some enormous obstacles; however, in the end what they shared was worth the struggle and the fight.

“Doms don’t have to say I love you.”

Sexual Awakenings is a fantastic, fast-paced and seriously sexy series. The writing is great as Ms. Chase takes us on a whimsical ride of emotion, passion, lust, desire and love. Violet’s and Rhys’ relationship evolves from one miscommunication and uncontrollable passion to one of absolute love. If you are a fan of sexy books with a dose of kink I would urge you to give this serial novella series a go. Definitely worth the read.

REVIEW - True

True - Laurann Dohner
4.5 Stars!

True is the eleventh installment in Laurann Dohner’s New Species series. This is a fantastically steamy and fun series that has yet to disappoint. Full of action, hot and sweaty scenes and romantically sweet moments, I am absolutely hooked when it comes to the sexy New Species alphas. When they find their mate, there is no stopping the wild beasts within! ;)

True (a.k.a. #710) is a canine New Species that was not freed initially. He was stolen by former Mercile employees and taken to another location. He was located much later and recovered with a few others. His past and the information given is very vague. We know that he endured a lot of horrifying experiences at the hands of Mercile, like all the other New Species. We also discover that he once has some affectionate feelings towards a human female only to have it seem that he was foolish to feel that way. Presently, True has assimilated to his new life as a freed New Species and is working with the human task force that are charged with finding New Species that are still in captivity. He has a purpose and focus. All is well in his world until he encounters a dying woman at one of their raids to recover captive New Species, the same woman who he once harbored feelings for. A woman who is now his enemy.

When Jeanie Shiver took on a position with Drackwood Research she had no idea that she would be working in a facility where captured New Species were being hidden. Jeanie knew that she could not walk away from the job without losing her life so she decided to try and help the New Species instead. This started her off on a long and dangerous journey that came with its own set of horrifying incidents that she had to endure. It was all worth it to Jeanie, though. Jeanie will never forget #710, one of the New Species that she hopes is freed now due to her efforts. He was someone who reached into her heart and did not let go.

When True and Jeanie are reunited once again, it is not under amicable circumstances. Jeanie is found severely wounded at the Cornos facility, a partner of Mercile Industries. It is clear that she worked for Cornos and was part of the employees who were continuing to run torturous experiments on New Species. Once Jeanie is recovered she will be sent to Fuller, the prison for humans who have committed crimes against the New Species. That is, unless she can prove she was helping free the New Species all along. Can she get through to True? Will the connection they shared once be her saving grace?

True may have not been a widely known character from previous books; however, I instantly fell in love with him. He most definitely faced a tumultuous inner battle as his duty to his kind needed to take precedent over the feelings Jeanie evoked in him. Jeanie was a sweet woman with a beautiful heart. She had her own battle to fight as she tried to prove her innocence. True and Jeanie had a rough and bumpy road. Can love conquer all when the person who holds your heart be the enemy of your people?

Laurann Dohner has penned another winner with True. We not only get a sweet love story but we also get to catch up with much beloved New Species from earlier books as well as being introduced to various new characters. Next up is Darkness’ book. I am very much looking forward to this one especially with this line: “You have heart, True. I don’t. Mine was torn out a long time ago and damaged beyond repair.”

REVIEW - Kaleidoscope Hearts

Kaleidoscope Hearts - Claire Contreras
4.5 "Just One Date" Stars!

“It’s a heart. They always break at some point. Sooner or later someone will come along and shatter it anyway—might as well be you.”

description

Kaleidoscope Hearts is a stand-alone romance by Claire Contreras. This is a story about getting back up after life has thrown you a harsh curveball and ultimately gluing the broken pieces of yourself back together once again. It’s about second chances and jumping feet first into something you may have not been ready for previously. Ms. Contreras has penned a touching tale about two individuals who have to decide whether it is worth it to risk it all.

description

description

After experience the harsh reality of heart-ache and loss, twenty-five year old Estelle Reuben (a.k.a. Elle) is ready to start fresh and hopefully move forward with her life. The untimely loss of her husband has taught Elle that life is short and you need to live life to the fullest. It may have taken her one year to get to this point; however, that is what she is going to try and do as she moves on from such a devastating loss. Live her life. She’s a successful artist with her own studio, Paint It Back, and she is determined to find herself again. After all, this is not the first time that Elle has had to recover from heart-ache. She unfortunately has dealt with heartbreak previously and learned some hard lessons when it comes to love. What Elle is completely unprepared for is for the reemergence of the cause of her first heartbreak in her life.

description

Elle and Oliver have been in each other’s lives since a young age with Elle’s older brother, Vic, being the common thread between them. As they started to get older, Elle started to become more than just his best friend’s little sister to Oliver. However, she was always the forbidden fruit that Oliver was not allowed to pursue. There came a point where he no longer cared. He could not stay away from the beautiful innocence and allurement that was Elle. Oliver began to want things with Elle that he had never wanted before. But, real life and the pursuit of his dreams and ambitions were equally as alluring. Whatever was starting to blossom between them could not happen. After all, Oliver had to get his life in order and finish med school before he could think of anything else.

“I am scared. I’m fucking terrified of having Oliver in my life because the last time I let him in, I barely made it out with my heart intact. I wonder if he even knows it.”

With Oliver back in her life, Elle knows that she must keep her distance. Understanding how deep her feelings run for Oliver, she knows she would not emotionally survive if he were to leave her again. But, Oliver is in pursuit of what he claims he wants. And, that is her. Just like when she was younger, Elle is having a hard time keeping her distance and saying no to the seductive charmer. Oliver may be older but he is still very focused on his career as he is at the end of his residency and about to become a full-fledged doctor. Plus, the fact that she is still his best friend’s little sister and remains off limits is also a factor. They may no longer be their sixteen and nineteen year old selves; however, some things seem like they have remained unchanged.

“Everything can be falling apart, but in his arms, I’m whole.”

*****

“We live in a galaxy of our own,” I whisper, kissing his earlobe. I smile when his breath quickens. “Where the storms pass, and the light fades, and everything ceases to exist except for us.”

This was such a heart-warming and emotional tale of love with two characters that found their way into my heart. I loved how Elle and Oliver slowly worked their way to a place where they were willing to take a second chance at what was between them. Elle may have taken a little longer than Oliver to be on the same page as him; however, I did understand her hesitancy. After all, I would also be cautious in her shoes. With this being said, Oliver was one determined fellow and Elle did not stand a chance against that steely resolve.

This was a beautifully crafted tale that took us into the past as well as focused on the present. I loved how Ms. Contreras gave us a sense of what Oliver and Elle were like as teens and how their young and fragile relationship blossomed and then abruptly ended. Elle was always someone that made Oliver what to step away from his carefully planned out life plan. Even as an adult, he had no idea how to handle the intensity of his feelings for her. It simply made him all the more endearing to me. As for Elle, I loved how selfless and compassionate she was. She had so much love to give and she was such a free spirit. Oliver just had to prove that he was worthy.

All in all, Kaleidoscope Hearts was a gorgeous stand-alone romance. This may have been a story that focused on the love between Elle and Oliver; however, there was so much more depth to this tale than a simple love story. We all experience love and heart-ache throughout our lives. We all find ourselves having to pick up the pieces at some point and attempting to put it all back together once again. What such a journey should teach us is that there is beauty in brokenness. It is in our fragility and struggles that we can emerge even stronger. Just because there are a few flaws and cracks along the way, does not mean that the shattered pieces cannot be made again whole again.

“Every second counts. Live in this moment. This is life. This is what matters.”

REVIEW - On Solid Ground

On Solid Ground - Melissa Collins

See my joint review with the lovely Mark at Sinfully Addicted To All Male Romance .

description

4.5 Stars!

Mark: Oh my goodness, now did I love this book or what? Loved the MCs Dax and Beck. Two men dealing with traumatic pasts and trying to overcome their experiences. Loved the dynamics between them. The typical but yet realistic communication problems when two guys unable to express their emotions openly get their wires crossed. Loved the story line. A plot that was intricate as well as well thought out and keeps the reader’s interest all the way. Loved the introduction of kids. Little Victoria, Beck’s five year old niece, was absolutely adorable and as I’m a sucker for kids I was a goner too. Loved the whole idea of a new family being formed. Not only from blood relations but one made of love and understanding. What were your initial reactions Lisa?

Lisa: Well, to be honest, I had no idea what to expect when I decided to give this book a go. After reading the synopsis I knew that On Solid Ground would be a book right up my alley. I am a sucker for damaged heroes striving to move forward and shed the pasts that haunt them. However, with this being said, when reading an unfamiliar author you are never quite sure whether you will end up pleasantly surprised or if you will be dragged into the land of the abysmally awful. What a wonderfully touching and beautiful book this turned out to be! I could not help falling in love with both Jacob “Dax” Daxton and Beckett Ridge (a.k.a. Beck). These two men, both equally damaged and broken for different reasons, both with very complex issues to sort through, suddenly find themselves thrown off course all because they discover one another. It may have not been the greatest timing for either one of them, but walking away was also not an option they wanted to contemplate.

Mark: I just felt so much for Dax and Beck. Dax is home from the military and suffering from PTSD and after what he had just experienced than no wonder. He is back home however his family doesn’t know that he is gay and he has never had the courage or the necessity to come out to them. That’s one of the reasons why he feels so caged and restricted at home and joined the military in the first place. Well, this also had parallels with my own personal story too! I was like totally, F*** ME and HOLY SHIT! It took me a long time to come out to my parents through fear of what they would think and I had already been in the Royal Air Force by a number of years by then. I told my younger brother first and then my parents, but like Dax in the end it happened but more by accident than it was ever planned, but I'm so grateful for it. If it didn’t happen I would have been shutting them out of a part of my life completely for fear of rejection which wouldn’t have been fair and in turn they came to love my husband of now 14 years as much as any son-in-law. Loving mums and dads will always come through as the love of their child and their happiness should never leave and always be the priority. This was my case and it was also the case for Dax when the time came. I was willing him on all the way to take that leap of faith that it takes to come out. He needed to find himself first however before going through all that. When he returns home first, for Dax it meant it wasn’t long before he moved out to live with his best friend Chloe. I could so relate to this side of the story, it was also realistically dealt with by Melissa with a lot of emotion, family love and tolerance taking the precedence even as tough as this may be at times. Also Dax’s backstory while he was in the military, his relationship with his comrade Delaney and the experience that led to his PTSD felt very real and to be honest a perfectly foreseeable scenario.

“I’ve spent the last four years of my life in the Army, fighting this war. It’s defined me as a man, and now, without it, I’m nothing.” ~Dax

Lisa: That is so amazing that you could relate to this story on such a personal level, Mark. I love it when that happens to me. Dax for me was someone who truly broke my heart at times. Here is a man back from serving his country and he is lost and trying so hard to deal with the after effects of his time in the Army as well as attempting to cope with PTSD. Like you indicated, Dax had felt like he could not be his true self at home and this is one of the reasons he joined the Army. He essentially escaped to find himself and now he feels like he is right back to square one, in the place he attempted to escape in the first place. Dax is simply trying to find himself once again, discover what life means for him without the Army being at the forefront. He wants to be more than a soldier. However, suffering from PTSD and having some serious anxiety attacks is hindering his progress. Beck comes into his life when it was chaotic and muddled. But, sometimes we find beauty in our messy circumstances.

Mark: Exactly Lisa, you would think that Dax would have enough on his plate coping with his trauma and getting his issues straight. But I guess life is always good a throwing curve balls when we least expect them and Dax definitely didn’t see this one coming. However, when Dax receives the letter from Delaney his former lover in the Army that was the point in the book where I choked up. What a beautiful moment! However, I just felt that I needed more of Dax’s and Delaney’s backstory, their relationship and how things developed just to have pushed me over the edge emotionally that little bit more which for me personally is why it didn’t quite hit the five star mark at that moment, but it was almost there. I felt if there was more on Dax’s backstory I could have connected a lot more with this beautiful moment and the letter from Delaney.

Lisa: I definitely agree, Mark. The letter from Delaney was one of the more heart-warming and emotionally touching moments in the book for me as well. I also agree that I would have liked more of a backstory when it came to Dax and Delaney. It seemed like they shared a very profound connection. I am not sure I can pinpoint why this book was not quite a five star read for me. I truly enjoyed it and found it to be a very moving tale of love. When it comes to my five star reads, they are usually based on how I feel when I finish the book. While I loved this book very much, I could not quite put it in my five star category.

Mark: As for Beck, well I never thought I would find a tattoo artist sexy, but this one I did and that is coming from someone who has never really appreciated I guess the art that goes into tattoos and possibly too chicken to get one - lol! However, what I loved with this character was the contrast. The tattoos gave him a kind of no nonsense, tough man exterior, but inside he was loving and caring and seemed to be a man with a big heart that could take the weight of the whole world on his shoulders. He and his sister who is in drug rehab at the time he meets Dax, never had what anyone could call a loving childhood. In actual fact considering what Beck and his sister experienced at the hand of their mother I’m surprised that Becks turned out to be the loving and caring adult that he is. Unfortunately, it did have the effect that his sister ended up going off the rails, but his love for his younger sister after they had stuck through the worst imaginable experiences as children shone through and I found this so admirable.

“Dax is the antithesis of everything I appear to be, but he’s the completion of everything I want to be.” ~Beck

Lisa: Ah, Beck. Sigh! I loved loved loved him. I DO appreciate the fine art of tattoos - particularly when they are on sexy males. LOL! I also loved how different Dax and Beck appeared to be. Dax was this honourable soldier who had served his country and Beck is this rough and gritty tattoo artist with a harsh upbringing. Despite Beck’s difficult childhood and the reality he faces with his sister, he truly is a man with a great heart. He has stood by his sister and loves her through thick and thin. Like Dax, he has a lot on his plate and his life is extremely stressful. The last thing he needs is a complication like falling for a sexy ex-soldier. But how can Beck walk away from a man whose broken spirit calls out to his own?

Mark: When these two guys meet for the first time in Beck’s tattoo shop then the usual game of attraction starts. Beck doesn’t reckon that Dax the big, beefy soldier boy could be gay and therefore mistakes Chloe for his girlfriend. Well, all the usual second guessing starts as Dax is a customer and Beck has to remain professional. But all the innuendos are there too. As always it it takes Chloe and Beck’s upbeat colleague and best friend Lexie to get the truth out of Chloe. I just loved these girls. Yes, don’t ask me why but it is quite normal that a lot of gay men have a female BFF! And here it just felt so right and realistic at least based on my experiences with my BFF. Loved the whole dynamics going on between the four of them.
Well, this is a story that gets on track eventually relationship wise, but more one of two steps forward and one back. Keeps things interesting and made for some really heart wrenching break-ups and miscommunication before they finally get their act together. At times I could have slapped the pair of them and banged their heads together for being so mule headed. Geez, sometimes they drove me to distraction, but all within reason when you consider the past experiences these guys have had.

Lisa: I loved how Beck and Dax fell into one another - the insecurities, the awkward beginning, the desire, the passion. It was all there and so realistically done. Let’s face it, how many of us start lasting relationships effortlessly and flawlessly? Anything real and worth it is always going to be messy, mistakes will be made and the awkwardness is simply part of it all. Beck is at a time in his life where his responsibilities are likely more than he can handle and starting a relationship with someone should be far off his radar. But the connection he feels with Dax is not one he can ignore. Both Dax and Beck are attempting to move on from their pasts and heal. They both want to focus on their respective futures. Both men find solace in each other. The question becomes whether that is enough? Amidst their chaotic and hectic lives, can they hang on to one another without causing the other to fall?

Mark: Dax eventually comes out to his family, not the way he had planned, well he never planned it at all really, but the truth will out. I found again this was dealt with realistically and with great sensitivity and had me choking up, especially the conversations with his mother towards the end. This is what was needed for Dax to go get his man. The love and support of a family is so important. I have no idea who Melissa talked too, where she got her info from about the experiences a lot of gay men go through when coming out to family and friends, but it couldn’t have been handled better. In a perfect and accepting world I guess the term “coming out” should really be a redundant one as no one should be made to feel that their sexuality is some dirty little secret. But I guess we have some way to go on that one.

Lisa: I am obviously not coming at this story as a gay man, but I do think that this author handled Dax’s “coming out” to his family beautifully. I can only imagine how hard that must be and how much courage it takes to open up to your family, particularly your parents. I agree with you, Mark. The fact that individuals actually have a hard time expressing who they truly are to their families is sad and should not happen in the first place. I am glad Melissa Collins gave Dax what he needed, the love and acceptance of his family. Those precious moments he had with his mother had me a little teary. As a mother myself of two young children, moments between mothers and their children (no matter how old they are) always pull at my heartstrings.

Mark: I also loved how Beck wanted to care for his niece and give her a childhood he never had. This is the part of the reason he was reluctant to commit to Dax entirely as he didn’t want Victoria taking to Dax only for him to disappear again. The child had been through enough with her mother, Beck’s sister. He gets legal custody and all’s well that ends well, Victoria totally accepts and loves Dax and Beck’s gets over his fears that Dax will leave. It was so lovely to feel the love that these two men had for this little girl and I’m sure she would have a happy and solid childhood with these two guys, if not a little spoilt I reckon - lol! Goes to show once again that family is love! No matter whether you have a mum and dad, two dads or two mums. Lisa what’s your take on this as a mum?

Lisa: I adored Victoria. She definitely took the story up a notch for me. Bring a small child into the mix and you have me. LOL! I absolutely adored how Beck fought for his niece and was determined to give her all that she needed. She came first for him. I also loved how quickly Dax succumbed to Victoria’s charms. He didn’t stand a chance against that sweet girl. I am in complete accordance with you, Mark. Love is love. No matter what. Both Beck and Dax loved little Victoria unconditionally. In the end that is all that really matters. As a mother I take care of my kids and provide them with their needs and wants. However, above all else, the most important thing I can provide for them is my unconditional love and acceptance. That is what family should be.

description

Mark: So all in all I loved this book from beginning to end, an emotional journey with these two for sure. I loved the way that each chapter alternates between Dax’s standpoint and Beck’s standpoint. I know this may not sit well with some readers, but for me it was perfect and gives a balanced view letting you understand more the emotions, thoughts and deliberations of each character. This will definitely not be the last M/M read for me from Melissa Collins and I’ll certainly be at the front of the queue to grab the next one that comes out.

Lisa: I also loved On Solid Ground. It is a beautiful tale about embracing love even when it comes at you at the most inopportune time in your life. When I finished the book after reading the epilogue I had a huge smile on my face. That is the sign of a wonderful romance, a book that leaves me happily sighing. This is my first book by Melissa Collins and it most certainly will not be my last.

REVIEW - You Loved Me At My Weakest

You Loved Me At My Weakest - Evie Harper, Hot Tree Edits
4.5 “Broken Soul” Stars!

“For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and Romeo,” Kanye softly whispers before he gently kisses my closed lips. “That’s us, baby, but we win. We turn our nightmares into a beautiful dream.”

description

You Loved Me At My Weakest is the second book in Evie Harper’s You Loved Me series. I loved the first book in this series and was therefore very excited to jump right into this one. First off, I highly recommend reading the first book in this series prior to diving into this one as it picks up where the previous book ends. You Loved Me At My Darkest (You Loved Me #1) may be about a different couple but it does set up the overall story arc for the series as well as introduces us to Emily and Kanye, the hero and heroine in this book. With this second installment, once again Ms. Harper has delivered a poignant and touching tale about finding your inner strength after it has been brutally shattered and moving forward from a place of abysmal darkness to one of beauty and light.

description

“But I’m broken, ruined, and worthless. What can I offer them? I’m tainted. Darkness has touched me more times than I can wrap my mind around.”

*****

“That’s what the devils gave me: pain, torment and despair. But I refuse to pass it on. It’s mine to bear and I will carry it alone.”

Emily Roberts was recently rescued by her brother, fiancé and their closest friends. She has spent the last five years of her life as part of “the collection”, fully immersed into the dark and ruthless world of human sex trafficking. The collection is well known in the dark underground society, a group of women Marco O’Connor, the king of the black market, has nefariously acquired and who are showcased at exclusive parties and auctioned off for the night to the most lucrative bidder. Emily was the first collection piece and lived an unimaginable nightmare for a long time and now that she has been given her freedom she is having a hard time letting go of her pain and torment. So much has been viciously stolen from her. Emily is beyond broken and damaged, believing all the worthless lies that were ingrained into her psyche over the five year period. She is a “whore”, “weak”, “a loser” – the list goes on and on. Instead of opening up to those around her that love and care for her, Emily walks this dark path alone refusing to let anyone in. No one deserves to fall into her despair right along with her, especially the man she loves more than life itself.

description

“I'm here through thick and thin. I'm here to save that beautiful, bruised soul of yours."

*****

“Moving on,” –he huffs out an annoyed laugh- “there is no moving on from you, Emmy. You are mine and I am yours. No matter how many nights apart we have endured and will endure, that will never change.”

Kanye has only ever loved one woman – his Emmy. She was stolen from him and it took him and his best friends five years to free her. For five years Kanye lived his own nightmare never knowing what Emily was going through, continuously tortured because he was unable to hold her and soothe her fears. Emily is back in his life once again but she is not the same girl she once was. What she experienced at the hands of the sadistic monsters she encountered has changed her and shattered her soul. What has remained unchanged is Kanye’s deep love and devotion for his Emmy. No matter how determined she is to push him away, Kanye is just as resolute to prove to her that he will not walk away and that he will walk this dark and lonely road at her side. She is his life and no matter how long it takes Emily to heal, Kanye will stand by her every step of the way. After all, that is what true love is all about.

“I’m so weak, yet this man loves me at my weakest.”

*****

“Emmy, I fell in love with you before I even knew what love was. And I will continue to love you until I’m old and senile and I forget what love is.”

*****

I haven’t felt love in five years. Have I forgotten how to appreciate it, how to receive it?”

Emily’s and Kanye’s journey was beyond beautiful. Emily broke my heart and this author does an amazing job drawing the reader into her torment. I literally felt Emily’s emotions pouring off the pages. It was so heart-wrenching to see a young woman who has been through unspeakable circumstances in her life slowly slipping into an even darker place and giving in to all her fears. Where was she even supposed to start? How do you fix someone who is irreparably broken?

description

Kanye will go down as one of my all-time favorite book boyfriends. There are no words to explain his utter devotion when it came to Emily. He was the light at the end of Emily’s murky tunnel. He was the hope she needed to cling to. No matter how hard Emily fought him, Kanye’s love could not be extinguished. I loved how strong Kanye was and how steadfast he was in his determination to bring Emily back from the brink of hopelessness. Seriously, there is no way that I can express how much I adored Kanye. I still happily sigh when I think about him.

All in all, You Loved Me At My Weakest was a tragically beautiful story about overcoming your fears and in finding strength in your moments of weakness. Sometimes love is enough and it can be the exact thing that can heal your soul and allow you to step forward and embrace a future full of wonder and light.

“I am Emily Roberts. I am a survivor. I am happy. I am loved, greatly.”

REVIEW - DIRTY TIES

Dirty Ties - Pam Godwin

5 “Love and Conflict” Stars!

“But in matters of revenge, looking for distractions often signifies a change of heart.”

description

Dirty Ties is yet another reason why I whole-heartedly love this author and would willingly have her love child. The queen of dark romance has given us something completely different than her norm and, yet, equally as enthralling and magnetic. Ms. Godwin has this innate ability to bring her characters to life and provide her reader with a multi-faceted story that will leave you breathless. While this book is not her usual dark romance with psychotic yet lovable characters, this author proves that she can write anything by bringing us a romantic suspense novel with a whole lot of eroticism thrown in that will leave you on the edge of your seat. This is a fast-paced, hard-hitting and gripping novel shrouded in mystery and with quite a few twists and turns I did not see coming. Fantastic!

Thirty-seven year old Kaci Blaskel was born to privilege as the daughter of a very influential family in Chicago. However, she has spent all of her life learning the hard lesson that privilege often comes with a price and, in Kaci’s situation, the price is a high one. She may be beautiful, married and have a successful career as the head of Trenchant Times Division but if one were to look too close they would discover that not all is what it seems. Kaci is trapped and her life is ruled by her power-hungry and vicious family. She has been forced into a marriage forged in deception with her best friend, Collin, and both of them must do as their told and live behind a carefully detailed façade as their families commandeer them as a puppeteer would play with his marionettes. Should Kaci and Collin fail to play the game with their families, it could cost them everything. Living a life that is a lie doesn’t mean that Kaci does not have dreams and desires of her own. She dreams of putting an end to the tyrannical rule that her parents and father-in-law have in her life and she yearns for a relationship that is both intimate and passionate – something she does not have with Collin. Kaci has dark and erotic fantasies and at the center of each and every vivid illusion is The Evader, a man famous in the illegal underground racing syndicate in Chicago. Kaci has never seen him without his bike helmet but that does not stop her from dreaming of all that he could do to her.

“A man like that fucks like he rides. With intimidation, recklessness, and unharnessed energy. He’s powered by adrenaline and takes what he wants without care.”

description

Thirty-two year old Logan Flynt is lethal and his need for revenge is the driving force that pushes him day in and day out. At the age of thirteen his life was tragically ripped apart and for the last ten years Logan has been setting up his plan of revenge and vindication. The path of vengeance has been painstakingly slow but Logan knows it is only a matter of time before he accomplishes all that he has in store for the individuals who destroyed him. Nothing is more important to Logan than exacting retribution, that is until he meets an alluring woman who is about to change everything.

That is all I am going to really say about the overall plot. You simply have to read this book for yourself. Just know that this book is an action-packed, high-powered thrill ride from start to finish. I was enthralled for the entire book and it also does not hurt that this book pretty much shattered my ovaries into obliterated pieces of flesh. Yup. It was that hot. Our hero and heroine share some unbelievable chemistry and some of the scenes came close to incinerating my mini iPad that I read off of. True story.

“The strongest love begins from a place of conflict. It's a volatile journey of committing and fighting and recommitting, but the effort is resolute and evolves into something so consuming the heart aches just thinking about it.”

Above the unparalleled suspense story-arc, what lies at the center of this tale is a beautiful love story that goes beyond revenge, coercion and familial ties. What our hero and heroine find with one another is powerful, profound and intense and it culminates into something both of them not only desired but needed. Logan’s master plan for revenge collides with Kaci’s own plans to escape. Secrets, betrayals, and emotional heartache all lead you down a rough and grueling path. One that had me guessing at every turn but also had me clutching my heart (or fanning my vagina.....whatever).

All in all, Dirty Ties is a book that once again proves why I love Pam Godwin’s unconventional romantic tales. Her writing is edgy, vivid and flawless. You will be captivated as Ms. Godwin takes you into the lives of Chicago’s corrupt upper-class and also into the dark underbelly of the racing world. If you have yet to give this author a try, I urge you to do so. You’d be surprised at all the wonder you can find in this tale of intrigue.

"I want you."

Three words, and she owned me. Hell, she owned me the first time I saw her at the finish line."

REVIEW - You Loved Me At My Darkest

You Loved Me At My Darkest - Evie Harper

4.5 Stars!

description

You Loved Me At My Darkest is the first book in Evie Harper’s You Loved Me series. It can be read as a stand-alone as each book in the series focuses on a new hero/heroine. I do recommend reading this book first as I imagine if you jump into the second book in this series without reading this one you will miss a big piece of the overall story arc. When I first ventured into this tale I really had no idea what to expect. Firstly, the synopsis is rather vague. Secondly, I have not read anything by this author and one never knows when you pick up the unfamiliar. Well, this turned out to be a rather gripping and sordid tale that had me enthralled from start to finish. It is one of those books that will ruthlessly take hold of you and refuse to let go until every last word has been read and absorbed. I absolutely love being swept away by a story, no matter how gritty and brutally tragic it is. And, trust me, this book did have darker undertones. There is something to be said about being able to stand strong and get through all that life throws your way. It may leave you marked; but, when the journey ends and you finally walk into the light, the victory is that much more sweeter.

description

After the devastating loss of their parents and then having to take on the responsibility of their family farm in Australia to ensure that it stayed up and running, Lily Morgan and her younger sister, Sasha, decide to take a much needed break and go on a trip of a lifetime with one of their stops being New York City. Their dream vacation quickly turns into a nightmare when they are kidnapped and whisked away into the dark world of sex slave trafficking. Upon arriving at an unknown location Lily and Sasha are separated. Sasha is to become a working slave to be auctioned off to the highest bidder when the time comes and Lily is to be kept apart as part of the infamous “collection” owned by Marco O’Connor, the king of the black market and a man as lethal as he is crazy. There is only one certainly in Lily’s new world. She will do anything to protect her sister.

description

Jake is the guard assigned to look after Lily. He has made a name for himself as one of Marco’s men in his role as one of the men that searches cities hunting for more “collection pieces” for Marco. The collection is well known in the dark underground society, a group of women Marco has nefariously acquired and who are showcased at exclusive parties and auctioned off for the night to the most lucrative bidder. Jake’s ultimate role is to become a guard for the collection pieces, the ultimate position for those under Marco, and nothing will stand in his way.

“Am I so far gone, so far fucked up that I will take comfort from anyone right now?”

Jake and Lily are drawn to one another despite their circumstances. As Lily is introduced to exactly what it means to be a part of the collection and as she desperately tries to protect her sister, she finds herself inexplicably turning to Jake for comfort. Jake is this enigma. He can be cold and calculating but there are moments where Lily sees pain and regret in his eyes. Jake is unwilling to risk all that he has worked for. No matter how badly he desires Lily, Jake is too close to accomplishing what he needs to throw it all away now. As their attraction grows and the connection they share becomes more profound, Jake and Lily both find themselves fighting against something they are unsure they can withstand. But, not all is what it seems and as the twists and turns come at you it becomes clear that sometimes you will do anything for the ones you love.

All in all, You Loved Me At My Darkest was a great read start to finish. The overall story arc was well thought out and even though I did guess some of the twists that occurred, I was captivated and wanted to see how things would work out for Lily and Jake. This is a tale about survival and how love can blossom even when we are going through our darkest moments. Well worth the read!

REVIEW - Tiger

Tiger - Laurann Dohner

4.5 "Animal Magnetism" Stars!

description

When it comes to this series I have long accepted that I am wholly addicted to the super sexy new species males who have no qualms about showing their animalistic natures. I gobble up each book and have no issues with the fact that these books are nothing but an erotic good time. Therefore, I....

description

Don’t judge, kay! ;)

Tiger is the seventh book in Laurann Dohner’s New Species series. Ever since Tiger came into the picture in this series I have been waiting for his book. I wanted to see this “cool as a cucumber” feline lose his cool over a female, something he has been adamant he would never do. Ms. Dohner sure delivered and watching Tiger wrestle with his desire to keep a female at his side for always was definitely a fun ride.

description

“Double shit. She’d molested the damn head of security of the NSO at Reservation. Just bitchin’.”

***

“Zandy Gordon didn’t fit into his life but she fit perfectly into his arms.”

description

Tiger meets Zandy Gordon one evening when his team is called in by the local law enforcement to help them deal with a bar brawl. There in the midst of all the chaos he saves a beautiful redhead who leaves him stirring in more ways than one. Zandy is a thirty-one year old woman with two failed marriages behind her. She has relocated from Los Angeles to northern California when she landed a better paying job. Her dream of starting fresh quickly turns into a nightmare when her new boss turns out to be a sadistic freak who is constantly putting the moves on her. Matters go from bad to worse when Zandy finds herself in the middle of a huge bar fight. She is rescued by a beautiful “angel” who she decides to put the moves on before she comes to her senses. It takes her a while to realize that she was molesting the head of security of the New Species Organization! When Zandy loses her job she finds one working in the mail room for the New Species. The only problem with this is that she will be coming into regular contact with the sexy male who saw her at her worse. Tiger and Zandy definitely feel an undeniable pull towards one another; however, both are adamant that they are not looking for anything permanent. Their passionate encounters only leave them wanting more. Zandy is bringing out Tiger’s animal instincts and he is quickly losing his cool. Can they both renege on their determination to stay single and give in to their feelings?

Once again, Laurann Dohner has penned a fun sand sexy tale which is a great addition to this series. Tiger is going down as one of my favorites in the series so far. Now onto the next.....

REVIEW - Merry Christmas, Baby

Merry Christmas, Baby - Jill Shalvis

5 Stars!

"Everything," he said, and brushed his mouth along her temple. "You've got everything I've got and everything I am."

Jill Shalvis is one of my favorite contemporary romance authors. Her books always leave me with a fluttering heart and a smile on my face. The Lucky Harbor series is one of all time favorite series. Every time I picked up a new book in this series it felt like coming home, a place where I knew I would find quirky and loving residents getting into all sorts of mischief. I have always loved getting lost in the quirky town of Lucky Harbor revisiting the lovable and eccentric habitants. This author seems to follow a familiar formula with many of her books; however, it is a formula that works and keeps me engrossed with the story and her beautifully developed characters. Jill Shalvis writes fantastically hilarious and witty tales, swoony romances and hot and sexy times that leave you all hot and bothered.

Merry Christmas, Baby focuses on one of my favorite couples in this series, Chloe and Sawyer. Sheriff Sawyer Thompson is this ruggedly handsome and stoic man who happened to fall for a stubborn, free-spirited woman who keeps him on his toes. In this short novella Chloe is almost ready to give birth to their first child. She is feeling moody and insecure and the fact that Sawyer is taking jobs away from home with the DEA to help pay for what they will require for the baby is not helping. Despite the fact that Sawyer is away from home, he still wants to ensure that Chloe is safe and well cared for. He wants her to take it easy considering the fact that she has debilitating asthma. But, alas, our hard-headed heroine is determined to go to a town Christmas party as one last hoorah before baby Thompson arrives. With the town turning up for this Christmas event, a huge snowstorm and a baby that wants to make its entrance into the world a little early, things certain become very interesting. Will Sawyer make it back on time and save the day?

I am saddened that this is the last book in this particular series. Lucky Harbor and it quirky inhabitants will always hold a special place in my heart. It will certainly be a series that I revisit from time to time.

REVIEW - Saltwater Skin

Saltwater Skin: an erotic novella (Breaking in Waves Book 3) - Laila Blake

4.5 "Saltwater Love" Stars!

“It’s always the simple things that can squeeze your heart with such exquisite pain.”

description

Saltwater Skin by Laila Blake is the third and final novella in her Breaking in Waves series, the end of Paul and Iris’ story – or perhaps the beginning. This is a series that explores dominance and submission between a forty-three year old reclusive American screenwriter living in a quaint small seaside town in England and a twenty-eight year old journalist who initially went to his home to conduct an interview of him. All three books in this series are not overly long and I would consider this a serial novella series; however, the series is a very well written one. Frankly, the writing is exquisite. This author has this innate ability to draw me in and Ms. Blake had me completely enthralled with her eloquent and lyrical writing style. I was swiftly entranced with the narrative and loved the rhythmic flow of this book. Nothing felt rushed. Nothing came out of left field. It was a simple continuation of the story between two individuals that captured my attention right from the start.

“We’re about to embark on something new, about to wreck what we had before in favor of the deeper, the longer, the more intimate connection. There is risk in that, and treasure. And also loss. Maybe.”

This story picks up where the previous one leaves us. Please note that the first two books do not end in cliff-hangers. They are simply a continuation of what is occurring between Iris and Paul, their love story. After being in a long-distance relationship for the better part of a year, the couple finally decides to take the next step and Iris moves the fishing village where Paul resides. What I absolutely adored about this installment is the fact that it is written in Paul’s POV. I loved seeing everything through his eyes, discovering his fears, needs and desires. His love for Iris simply transcends everything, as if he can’t believe he finally found his perfect mate. Paul worries about how he may be too old for Iris but when they are together all is right in his world. It seems that it simply took him a little longer than most to get to the place where he found the other half of his soul. Paul slowly must shed the last of his bachelor tendencies to make room for Iris in his home, his life. As for Iris, she is exactly where she wants to be. Paul is everything she desires and he fulfills her in ways she would never had discovered if it were not for him. The love this couple shares is truly beautiful. Can Paul and Iris merge their two lives together in the picturesque seaside world that initially brought them together?

description

“That’s what she does: she lights me up. That’s what she’s been doing from the first.”

*****

“She is my air, my water, my bread. She makes me want to be better than I ever was, and then makes it easy to be just that. My marvel. My newfound world.”

I absolutely loved the setting where this book (as well as most of the series) took place, a small dilapidated fishing village off the coast of England. Ms. Blake does a stellar job transporting her reader into this picturesque and antiquated village where you settled in Paul’s home to have tea and walked along the rocky shores captivated by the driftwood and other inanimate stray objects along the beach. It definitely made for the perfect setting where Paul and Iris’ story could play out. While in the previous book we see Iris’ emotional journey play out, this time we see everything from Paul’s standpoint. We understand their intense connection through his eyes, watching him experience the plethora of emotions only Iris evokes in him. Everything builds and unfolds into an intense, complex and beautifully told love story with quite a bit of kink added into the mixing pot.

I have come to adore the writing style of this author. Ms. Blake writes in such a manner that each word, scene, nuance has a purpose. For me, nothing was wasted or superfluous. Each moment is carefully planned out as Paul takes Iris deeper and deeper into the world of submission, as we watch their relationship grow into something more and finally as we see them develop an everlasting connection. I once again loved Paul’s calm and collected demeanor and ease with his need for dominance at this point in his life and this was simply exhilaratingly sexy. I again had no problems imagining how freeing it was for someone like Iris to simply let go and trust herself, her body, to Paul. I understood their powerful connection. Paul wants to give Iris the world and she willingly places her absolute trust in the hands of the man she adores.

All in all, Saltwater Skin was a beautifully exquisite ending to this spectacular series. I am not a huge lover of novellas but this author has made me fall in love with Paul and Iris and their tale of passion and need. This is most definitely a series I will be re-reading.

REVIEW - Heart Recaptured

Heart Recaptured - Tillie Cole

4.5 "Pilgrim Prude" Stars!

description

Heart Recaptured is the second book in Tillie Coles Hades Hangmen series. After reading It Ain’t Me, Babe, the first book, I was anticipating this read with bated breath. Given the fact that the first installment was a spectacular start to this series, I knew that this book would be something special. I was absolutely correct in my assumption. Picking up right where the first book left us, what Tillie Cole has created here is an utterly brilliant and poignant tale of love that had me reeling with its raw, gritty and dark nature. Gone is Ms. Cole’s sassy and fun story-telling that we have come to know and love in her other works. What you get is an edgy, gripping and twisted story about survival and salvation. Once again this author has definitely portrayed that she has some mad writing skills that left me utterly speechless and in awe.

description

Kyler Willis (a.k.a. Ky) is the Vice President of the Hades Hangmen. He’s known nothing but the biker way of life for as long as he can remember and he is fiercely loyal to his club and his brothers. Ky is all about the biker lifestyle and has no qualms about being a dangerous outlaw when it comes to protecting what he cares about. He is vulgar, reaps in the abundance of women available to him and is wild at heart. Ky was front row and centre when it came to rescuing Mae and her two sisters from the commune. Ever since that fateful night he can’t seem to get a certain gorgeous pilgrim-blonde out of his head, someone he knows he needs to stay far away from. When his drunken behavior lands him in trouble with Styx, the club President, Ky is ordered to show the innocent young woman what life is like on the outside. Ky is reluctant at first; but, he soon discovers that he wants nothing more than to spend time with the person who seems to occupy all his wayward thoughts.

description

Delilah (a.ka. Lilah) has been raised in a strict religious commune under the rule of a Prophet named David never knowing what life was like beyond the fence that encompassed the commune. Her twenty-four years of life have been about rules and religious codes, rules she is meant to follow or else suffer the consequences – rules that keep her engulfed in misery and entwined with a destiny she feels like she is meant to lead. Rules that are supposed to be her path to salvation. After all, she is cursed because of her beauty and only within the walls of the Order can Lilah be guaranteed redemption for her wicked ways. When the Hades Hangmen attack the commune to save Mae, Lilah and her sister Maddie are taken away from the destroyed commune. How can Lilah live in the sinful outside world, a world threatening to engulf her in evil?

Lilah all of a sudden finds herself having to deal with the uncertainty of the outside world, a world she has been taught is full of hate and sin. She is confused, frightened and resents the fact that she was taken from the safety of the commune. Lilah yearns to be with her people once again because it is only under the care and guidance of the Prophets that she can truly be saved. I did find her a little hard to take at first. Yes, she is a damaged girl who has been conditioned to believe what she does; however, there were moments I want to shake her and simply want her to see just how blinded she was. When Ky is charged with her care and they begin to spend time with one another, Lilah begins to realize that there may be more to the man she considers a wicked sinner with no moral compass. Ky is captivated by Lilah despite the fact that he thinks she is bat-shit crazy. As he gets to know her he becomes determined to do right by her and his protective instincts kick in. Can Ky be the one that gives Lilah the one thing she craves – his unconditional love?

I have to say that I fell hard for Ky. He was a true free spirit and it was hard not to be entranced with the sexy biker. What I loved the most about him though was the stuff that came out of his mouth. For lack of a better term, I will call them Ky-isms . Here are a few of my faves:
“A hardcore Bible freak who weren’t gonna be sucking on my chub anytime soon. I mean, damn, my cock would have to be damn a gold-plated, prophet-blessed crucifix to pry her perfect pins apart.”

****

“How the fuck does a bitch that hot be so fuckin’ psychotic?”

*****

“How the fuck did you get through to this level of crazy?”

*****

“I don’t like swimming. It’s too much like hard work. I don’t like getting wet. It fucks with my hair.” I smirked, winked and added, “but, I’m more than happy to get you wet in other ways, sugar tits.”

*****

“Gotta take life by the balls at some point and squeeze those fuckers with the skill of a whore.”

*****

Bitches cream like fuck over this face and body. It’s because I’m hot, sweet cheeks. Happens all the time.”

LOL!

Heart Recaptured is ultimately a beautifully crafted tale of love and perseverance with two completely opposing protagonists who should never have had a chance at love with one another and, yet, they endure proving that they are fated for one another. Lilah represents all that is kind, forgiving and good despite having had her innocence and childhood stolen from her by vile acts done in the name of a higher power. She is facing a huge battle within and it is up to Ky to show her the way. Ky is this violent protector with blood stains tarnishing his soul. He lives life to the fullest and is just the person that Lilah needs.

Like its predecessor, this story was captivating, unique and absolutely breathtaking. I was utterly entranced with its brilliance. Basically, Tillie Cole had me by the balls....er....so to speak. The plot is complex and yet this author manages a seamless flow from one scene to another. This book is magical and the twists and turns left me on the edge of my seat.

All in all, Heart Recaptured is yet another literary feat that Tillie Cole should be extremely proud of. This series is truly original and each book sweeps you right in and refuses to let go. I can’t wait for the next book. Flame has intrigued me right from the beginning. I am looking forward to seeing how his story plays out.

REVIEW- Tamed by Stacey Kennedy

Tamed - Stacey Kennedy

3.5 “Kitten” Stars!

“He wanted submission. She demanded the pain she needed to drift away from reality.”

description

Tamed is book five in Stacey Kennedy’s Club Sin series. This installment to the series brings Porter and Kenzie to the forefront. Can the sassy spit-fire who likes to give all the Club Sin Doms a run for their money be tamed by the Dom who has a lot to prove?

Porter Marshall, a successful private investigator that owns his own company, has been a Dom and living the lifestyle for quite a number of years. He’s a recent addition to the Club Sin family and is close to becoming a Club Sin Master. However, in order to achieve his goal of becoming a Master, Porter must play with the club “brat” for thirty days. He knows for certain his patience is about to be tested. Kenzie Hart is the one Club Sin submissive that gives all the Doms reason to bring out their inner sadist. She is the fiery sub that can’t be tamed. Kenzie enjoys pushing the limits in order to get the Doms to dole out some punitive measures, but there is no way she is going to let a Dom get too close to her emotionally.

“Ah, kitten, keep hissing at me. I’m becoming rather fond of it.”

*****

“Hell, she knew she lived in the past too much to be present in the now.”

Porter soon realizes that Kenzie will definitely be his biggest challenge yet. Their sexual attraction may be scorching hot but he demands nothing but complete submission from Kenzie, something she is unwilling to give. Porter knows that he must proceed with caution if he is going to get anywhere with Kenzie and break down her highly-erected and well-guarded walls. As the pair begin to learn more about one another, Porter realizes that there is more to Kenzie than the problematic sub she portrays for all of Club Sin. She is hiding behind a façade, one that masks a great deal of hurt and emotional pain. As Porter begins to see the true submissive that Kenzie keeps hidden from the rest of the world, he can’t help but want more from the spunky sub who is slowly inching her way into his heart. Can Kenzie finally allow someone in and can she handle finally giving up complete control?

Overall I found Porter and Kenzie’s story to be well-paced and entertaining despite the fact that this book is not overly lengthy. I absolutely loved Porter. He has a heart of gold and is the perfect Dom to tame Kenzie. The sex in this book was nothing too overly graphic and intense, just like the previous books in this series. I believe it would be safe to call this a BDSM-lite book/series. Yes, Porter and Kenzie do share some highly erotic and sexalicious moments; however, nothing shared between the pair was extreme in any way. I suppose if you are interested in BDSM books and have yet to read one, this series may be a good start seeing that there is nothing too risky being thrown at the reader.

I did have some issues with the book. Kenzie was not my favorite heroine of the series so far. I did not mind the fact that she was so guarded and difficult, but I did find the reasons behind her behavior to be rather silly. Sure she has experienced hurt in the past but we all go through things that cause us emotional pain. What she went through, for me, did not warrant the fact that she had some pretty fortified walls around her heart. That’s just me though. Further, the book seemed to end rather abruptly which has happened with some of the previous books. I am positive we will see more of Porter and Kenzie in the remaining books in the series, but a little more of an ending regarding the two would have solidified them more as being together and seeking out their happy forever.

All in all, Tamed was a good read that held my attention. I am a fan of the series and am looking forward to what else Ms. Kennedy has in store for her readers with it comes to Club Sin and the kinky delights that take place within its walls.

ZIP, ZERO, ZILCH - Lisa P. Review

Zip, Zero, Zilch (The Reed Brothers Book 6) - Tammy Falkner
4.5 "Cupcake" Stars!

description

Zip, Zero, Zilch is the sixth book in Tammy Falkner’s The Reed Brothers series and it picks up right where the novella, Beautiful Bride, left off. I love this series and have fallen hard for all the sexy Reed Brothers. With all of his brothers now living their happy forever with the women they love, it is time to see Sam finally get his turn at taking a chance on a forever kind of love. Filled with sweetness, tender-hearted moments, witty banter and sexy good times, this book sure did not disappoint. Happy sigh!

description

Sam Reed and his brothers may have not had the easiest of upbringings but they have all managed to reach for their goals and live the life they dreamed of. Sam is no exception and seems to be living the American dream with a contract to play professional football and a loving family who supports him. Despite his success, Sam feels as if something is missing in his life. He sees how in love all his brothers are with their significant others and he can’t help but long for the same thing. He wants to find his other half. The problem is that Sam thinks he may have already found her. Too bad the sexy rock chick he can’t stop thinking about shies away from him and wants nothing to do with him.

"She is going to marry me one day. She just doesn’t know it yet.”

*****

He squeezes my hand. “I’m pretty sure I’m in love with you, cupcake,” he says. “I just wish you could love me back.”

*****

“Do you think you could fall in love with me, cupcake?”

*****

“I’m having really inappropriate thoughts about you right now,” I blurt out. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. When I open them, she is grinning.

“What kind of inappropriate thoughts?”

“The kind where you’re completely naked.”

“And what are you wearing?”

I stop, close my eyes, and again take a deep breath. Then I open my eyes and look straight into hers. “You.”

*****

“You can try out my piercing after you fall in love with me, okay?”

“What?”

“I kind of need for you to love me, Peck.” He’s quiet but fierce. “You’re not in love with me yet, are you?”

“Um…” I don’t know how to answer him.

“It’s okay. Don’t rush it. I can wait.”

Peck is so guarded and closed off and Sam knows he needs to approach and proceed with extreme caution. He essentially wanted her from the first moment he laid eyes on her lush and curvy body. Even though Peck is very attracted to Sam she can’t help but believe that he will end up hurting her and she would not survive that kind of hurt. The best thing she can do is stay away from someone that can break her heart. When circumstances lead to Peck staying at Sam’s apartment for an indeterminate amount of time all her plans of ignoring Sam’s advances fly out the proverbial window. For Sam, he finally has the woman of his dreams where he wants her and there is no way he is going to let her get away. I love how sweet and caring Sam was with Peck. He was endearing, charming and so openly honest about his feelings for Peck. Seriously, how could you not fall hard for him??? His penchant for dirty talking was simply an added bonus! ;)

Like every book in this series, Zip, Zero, Zilch is sugary sweet with a huge dollop of gushy and wonderful moments. Is it a little over-the-top at times? Perhaps. But, I would not have it any other way. I sure love being transported into a love story that is nothing but sweetness, one that gives me butterflies. I enjoy reading a book with little to no angst where I simply want to see the hero and heroine fall in love and proceed to dance with unicorns in the rainbows all the way into a happily ever after. Sure, Sam and Peck have a bit to work out and their happy forever is not going to come super easy; however, they both know real when they see it and what they share is worth the fight. Both Peck and Sam make some mistakes along the way but it only serves to cement their relationship even deeper. It also helps that Ms. Falkner adds in some seriously hot moments between the pair that will leave you fanning your girlie parts. Those Reed boys certainly have mad skills. *wink, wink*
“The Reeds take people in like they’re family. Anyone. The only requirement is that you have a pulse. And if you don’t have a heart, they’ll give you theirs.”

One of the best things about this series and about each book is being able to catch up with the Reed brothers in each and every book. I simply love seeing how much love they have for one another and how they embody a true sense of family. Their banter and antics make them these seriously hot and lovable band of brothers with unwavering love for one another that you will fall in love with more and more with each book. The connection between the Reeds is absolutely beautiful. There is one scene in particular in this book starring Logan, the first of the Reed boys to give his heart away, that had me crying and clutching my heart. This whole series simply melts my heart!

All in all, Zip, Zero, Zilch is a wonderful addition to this series and I loved seeing Sam and Peck, who both had fame and fortune, discover that one thing they needed to make them complete. Each other. This book also marks the final book about the Reed brothers. Sniff, sniff. While Sam was the last Reed to find love the series will continue and Ms. Falkner has books planned for each of the members of Fallen From Zero as well as other secondary characters. Well now. That is news that makes me giddy with joy. After getting to know Peck’s sisters a little in this book I am sure what is to come next will be just as amazing as all the previous books. I simply can’t wait for more!

“Tell me what you want.”

“You,” I say. “Just you.”

“You got me,” he whispers against my lips.

DISFIGURED LOVE - Review by Lisa P.

Disfigured Love - Georgia Le Carre, Lori Heaford, Nicola Rhead
3 “Go to the devil.” Stars!

“They must have the forbidden fruit, or paradise will not be paradise for them.” ~Alexander Pushkin, Eugene Onegin

description

Disfigured Love is my first book by Georgia Le Carre. This is a modern-esque and fairytale-like take on Beauty and the Beast where both our hero and heroine are emotionally fragile and scarred. The story is dark, gritty, painful and harsh – a far cry from the Disney version we all know and love.

Lena Seagull was raised in a log cabin located somewhere in remote Russia. Her home was ruled by her tyrant father who was cold, detached, dictatorial and abusive. Lena experienced horrific harsh realities never really knowing what love and security truly felt like. As Lena grew up she watched her sisters all be sold off by her father and she was left wondering when her day would come. It eventually did and Lena was sent off leaving only her brother behind with their father. Lena was now at the mercy of the unknown. She is eventually smuggled into England and brought to the secluded Broughton Castle. Lena is met by friendly staff; however, she soon discovers that her purpose is to serve her new master. She is there to fulfill his base desires, to be nothing more than a common whore who is discarded when she is not needed. From one harsh reality to another.

"Have you ever done something shameful to survive?" I asked defiantly.

"Yes." His voice was unemotional and cold.

I was shocked. I had not really expected him to answer me. "What?" I whispered.

"I bought you."

Guy Hawke is a billionaire who was disfigured in a tragic accident. He is broken, scarred and lives in a lonely dark abyss overcome by his pain and anger. His loneliness and perhaps the need to fulfill his biological desires lead him register with a sex slave internet site. Despite his guilt over his actions, Guy never stops the envelopes that showcase different slaves from arriving at his home. He never is tempted to buy one of the slaves until the envelope with Lena’s pictures and profile arrives. Once he sees the Russian beauty, Guy is compelled to have her. He puts up a hardened outer shell in order to justify his actions. Right or wrong Guy will own Lena.

Right from the onset Lena and Guy have an undeniable connection. Guy wants to give her more but how can he when he knows there is no way she would fall in love with the monster he has become. With so many secrets, lies and betrayals between them, can the beauty fall in love with the beast?

One of the things I enjoyed about this book was Ms. Le Carre’s style of writing. I found it very vivid and compelling. I was swiftly entranced with the narrative and was completely enraptured with the beginning of the book about Lena and her family. Lena’s upbringing was tragic and I so desperately wanted to see her find a slice of happiness after all she had endured. What Lena is forced to withstand is so horrifying and the author does an amazing job depicting her journey and setting the stage for a tale where our heroine overcomes all odds. With all this being stated, I did have some issues with the book, particularly with the choices the author made when it came to the overall story arc and the direction of this unconventional and messed up tale.

Once Lena is brought to Guy in England there were so many moments that left me perplexed and that I felt came straight out of left field. I am a reader that does not mind over-the-top storylines that can be unbelievable at times; however, this book had me suspending my disbelief at a level that was even too much for me. Everything from their first sexual interaction, to the discovery of Guy’s big secret and the events that follow the revelation had my head spinning. It felt like there was way too much going on with not enough time spent hashing out all the complexities of the story the author was trying to create. Further, towards the end there is a mad rush to clue everything up and give the reader a desired ending. It was all too fast leaving me no time to become emotionally connected with the characters or all they had experienced. Perhaps if there was less going on and more attention to detail was provided I would have rated this one a little higher.

All in all, if you are a lover of darker romances with a bit of an edge, Disfigured Love may be a book you would enjoy. While I may have had my issues with the story, the writing itself is well done. There is no doubt that Ms. Le Carre is a talented author. I will certainly be reading more books by her.

PULLED WITHIN - Review by Lisa P.

Pulled Within (The Bar Harbor Series) (Volume 2) - Marni Mann

4 “Back and forth.” Stars

“Everyone has a chance to heal. Some people choose to stay in the past and let their scars define them. Others choose to let it be nothing more than a mark on their body.”

description

Pulled Within is the second book in Marni Mann’s Bar Harbor series. I really enjoyed the first book in this series; however, I have to admit that this book was even better than the first. This is a book where we meet the heroine at her lowest. It is a book about finding the strength within yourself to push through the demons of your past and take a shot at a second chance at life, a second chance at love. When one is living through a tumultuous storm it is hard to see the end, the eye of the storm. It is difficult to imagine a life beyond the pain and the darkness.

“No one wanted to see this kind of damage. It was violent and disgusting, dirty and evil. It was destructive. It had ruined me. My face, my skin, my soul.”

We meet Rae Ryan in book one in this series. She wasn’t portrayed as exactly the most endearing of characters. What we discover in this book is that Rae is broken and scarred, both inside and out. For five years Rae has been living a nightmare, tormented by her past and carrying a lot of guilt. She essentially hits rock bottom at the commencement of this book. Rae has lost her job and is being evicted from her apartment, her best friend is in rehab and she is all alone attempting to cope with an upcoming anniversary that brings her to a place of pain and desolation. She struggling to keep her head above water so the last thing Rae needs is a blast from her past coming back into town.

“I wasn’t the soft thing he’d left behind all those years ago. I was made of scars now, of storms and squalls that tossed me about and made my life unpredictable. I was hardened.”

Hart Booker was Rae’s high school boyfriend, someone who broke her heart and left her behind when he moved away from Bar Harbor. Hart comes back into town and once he connects with Rae once again, he is determined to show her just how much he cares about her and how leaving Bar Harbor in the first place was not his choice. Rae is no longer the sweet natured girl he loved in high school. The girl before him now is scarred, in pain, and full of darkness. Hart can’t walk away from their undeniable connection though. He wants to be with Rae, scars and all. He just has to convince her that he is in for the long haul and he won’t ever leave her again. Will Rae ever trust him enough to reveal all that she has been through, to allow him to help him carry her burdens?

I loved how careful Hart was with Rae and how he was very aware of the fact that he could not simply storm back into her life. He had to inch his way in, slowly. On the surface Rae and Hart seemed like two complete polar opposites. She is the girl from the wrong side of the tracks with a horrible past and he is the rich boy who is put together and knows exactly what he is doing with his life. However, with this being said, there was no denying that the pair were two pieces of a whole. Both Hart and Rae were never able to completely let go of their feelings for the other despite the years they were apart. Rae was in such a dark place in her life and Hart comes in at the right time and becomes this white knight determined to save his girl. In the end though it is up to Rae to pull herself from the dark abyss. Hart was there to comfort her and stand by her, but she had to be the one to finally decide that she no longer wanted to be defined by her past. Rae had to be the one to decide she was ready to let go.

“Scars and rain. We were more similar than I’d thought.”

*****

“We were the calm after a beautiful storm that I never wanted to end.”

All in all, Pulled Within is an emotional tale about healing and second chances. I do think that the romance was more central in this book than it was in its predecessor and that is likely why I enjoyed this book a bit more than the first. You can definitely read this book as a standalone; however, I would recommend reading this series in sequential order. You get a better feel for the series in doing so. Rae is present in the first book so you get to know her a bit before her story is showcased in this book. A great new adult series! I am now a fan of Marni Mann and look forward to more books in this series.
